Bulgarian Water Association - BWA: IAWD Member of the Month
Contributed by:
Voice of the Danube

We proudly present the "Member of the Month" special feature series that provides insights into the work of our members, the successes they achieve, the challenges they overcome, and the thinking behind their IAWD memberships.

We introduce "Member of the Month" because we all know very well that IAWD's success is driven by lively communication, mutual support and shared know-how and experiences. The better we get to know each other, the more positive energy feeds into our community.

Core Activities

One of our main activities is the organization of conferences/seminars/workshops covering a wide range of water issues for many sectors aiming at both finding sustainable solutions for the water stakeholders but also bringing focus to the water problems for the general society. With several events successfully concluded on an annual basis we can confidently say that this is a rather strong side of the Association. BWA also has years of experience of projects’ management and implementation. Another activity that we are engaged in in the Association is conducting trainings and obtaining additional competencies and qualifications in our officially certified national level Vocational Training Center of BWA. The center aims to improve the qualifications of employees in the water sector by organizing specialized trainings and seminars. Last but not least is the work on our magazine called BULAQUA Magazine. BULAQUA magazine is the official printed publication of BWA, included in the National Reference List of modern Bulgarian scientific publications with scientific review in the National Center for Information and Documentation (NACID) with No. 141. It is published twice a year and is distributed to several institutions, directly related to the water supply and sanitation industry.

The company's mission

The mission of BWA is to support the free, professional activity of all its members and to contribute to solving the problems of water supply and sewerage, treatment of potable and wastewater, efficient use of water resources and environmental protection in the country.

Three figures and facts

  • First, it is the subsidiary of BWA - BULAQUA Standart EOOD. It is a company that performs regular quality control checks of building materials being used in the WSS infrastructure through physical inspections in accredited laboratories and proves their compliance with product standards. "The body for certification of construction products "Quality Mark of BWA" at "BULAQUA Standart" EOOD is accredited and authorized by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, as well as the Executive Agency "Bulgarian Accreditation Service" to carry out certification of construction products intended for use in the construction of water supply networks in the Republic of Bulgaria."
  • Secondly, we are also proud of BULAQUA Magazine, as well as our Center for Vocational Training at BWA, which we talked about above.
  • Finally we would like to mention BWA’s Annual Conference - BULAQUA, which takes place every year (usually in late September) and covers various topics in the water sector. This is one of the strongest events in the water sector in Bulgaria and we are proud that over the years it has gained well-deserved popularity and great interest. The last such Conference in October 2024 had the topic of "Reducing Water Losses in the Water Supply Systems" and we can define the event as extremely successful setting our own personal record of more than 120 participants.

Do you have a Young Water Professionals (YWP) chapter in your association?

Yes, BWA has YWP chapter.

Why should young people work in the water sector?

Bearing in mind the lack of adequately trained employees working in the water sector, we believe that with the involvement of Young Water Professionals in the work of the Association, we can provide a bright future in this area.

Why did you become an IAWD member?

Exchange of experiences, capacity building, cooperation with associations from the region and beyond, participation in various events whose organization aims at overall improvement in the water sector, etc.
